To Grasp is to Hold, Eliza Wapner

opening November 9, 6pm-10pm

To Grasp is to Hold, a solo show by Eliza Wapner, explores the ever-changing quality of our relationships. Using silk organza, thread, and dye as her medium, Wapner chose to explore moments in the intimate relationships in her life through hands and various objects. The scenes represent both a snapshot in time and the fleeting nature of connection as participants are empowered to change each scene by shifting the panels side to side.

The translucent quality of the organza allows viewers to see through each vignette to the one behind it. The hands in each panel are simultaneously in relationship with each other and the other panels, depicting a series of layered and intersecting stories.

This piece invites you to notice change. You are invited to move the panels side by side to explore these different configurations. During a live dye performance, you are invited to dip pieces of fabric into a pool of indigo, participating in the transformation of the entire piece. This indigo bath is a ritual in collectively affirming change for ourselves in real time.

Wapner was inspired by the work of Christina Ramberg who painted evocative images of hands throughout her career. The wooden structures of this sculpture are designed and constructed by Joe Mulholland.

The opening of To Grasp is to Hold will be held at the Aquarium Gallery at 934 Montegut St. on November 9th from 6-10 pm. Please join for a dye performance at 7:30pm. Contact Eliza Wapner at eliza.s.wapner@gmail.com for gallery hours beyond the opening and with any inquiries.
